NATO SUMMIT

On 3/4 April 2009, the 28 Heads of State and Government of NATO’s member states gathered in Kehl/Germany and Strasbourg/France to celebrate 60 years of an Alliance that was pivotal in bringing about a Europe whole and free. And it was decision-time: Albania and Croatia joined NATO as Allies, France re-integrated in the military side of the Alliance, Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen was selected as new Secretary General, a Declaration on Alliance Security called for a new Strategic Concept, and NATO’s operation in Afghanistan saw a boost with troop reinforcements and a refocusing on the civilian aspects on the mission to name just a few of the major issues tackled.
